1. Lucidflow: How does a creative day look/feel like for you?

My creative day usually starts with either movies or some sort of visual inspiration. I’m a very visual person, I see things and imagine them musically, sonically. I’m very inspired by my surroundings, if the sun is too bright I’m useless. I thrive in gray moody, rainy, environments. I also read quite a bit, sometimes phrases or words or even syntax inspires me. One of my favorite poets is E.E. Cummings and he is famous for his minimalism and use of syntax.

2. Lucidflow: How do you hinder yourself in being creative?

I over think. Over complicate things. I’m also obsessive compulsive. I need to have things in order or else they will bother me and keep me from being free in my mind to create.

3. Lucidflow: how do you support yourself in being creative?

I don’t try to force myself. I also have to eliminate as much distraction as possible. I know myself pretty well and what conditions feed my creativity so I do my best to ensure I only try to work under those conditions, otherwise I get frustrated and will become disinterested.

4. Lucidflow: How did you come across Lucidflow?

Good question, I don’t know lol. I don’t recall exactly, but I think it’s been a collision that has been progress for a while now. We just seem to have gravitated towards each other unconsciously. We seem to be made of the same sort of material, and I guess like minds seem to gravitate towards each other.

5. Lucidflow: Tell us one of your greatest wishes:

To buy a farm, make a studio in the barn, make goat cheese, and raise chickens…

6. Lucidflow: Anything else you would spread to the Lucid world?

Beauty lies in the spaces in between and magic happens in the accidents.

If 2012 saw Lucidflow in darker and more muted territories, 2013 is like the lengthening of days after a chilly winter. Moovin’ Along weaves together warm bass notes, male vocal adlibs and multi­tonal chords, all placed with tweezer precision. Title track From The Soul teams soulful keys with spoken female chatter over swinging jazz flecked beats.

Weaving together the contemporary and the classical, 5th Cycle takes the best of organic house keyboard work and decorates it with electronic flourish in a track that belies its sharp edged punch. Tying off the release, Gone By isn’t just here to make up the numbers, an infectious groove based number that micro­glitches without losing that all important warmth and soul.

1. Lucidflow: How does a creative day look/feel like for you?

I wake up in Brooklyn to the sound of a chicken crowing next door. . . then hop on the L train and hear people serenading the underground subway world in many different forms (Brooklyn train stations have the best organic musicians) . . I find moments of inspiration all over NYC with the beauty of sounds surrounding me. by nightfall I am finally just “awake” and inspired, I turn off all the noise in my head to focus on studio work – tracks for my album or selecting music for my next set.

2. Lucidflow: How do you hinder yourself in being creative?

frequently remind myself that my calling is to remain the artist, and to draw into the music and hang out in the world in my headphones as much as possible.

3. Lucidflow: how do you support yourself in being creative?

getting distracted by stresses of life and/or too caught up in scene in NY. a lot of artists are so busy hustling around trying to get somewhere but they forget to actually “paint the canvas” so to speak. . .

4. Lucidflow: How did you come across Lucidflow?

I came across LF through my friend Deep Spelle who put out some amazing tracks and remixes on the label. I had been playing many LF tracks out in New York, the response from my dance floors kept me coming back as a solid “go-to” label.

5. Lucidflow: If you had infinite time & money what would you do?

study music production, make albums, then play a gig in every country in the world. I can only imagine the versatility I might have after that experience!

6. Lucidflow: Tell us one of your greatest wishes:

only one?! :)
I want people to “get it” when it comes to music. to me that means they understand underground music is not always about the “party.” DJ’s can often put up a front on stage but track selections are often the result of a lot of emotion going on in the background. this is the expression or artistry in it, and as a side note, this has nothing to do with being a male, female, or a race, color – it’s the human behind the art and nothing else. . .

6. Lucidflow: Anything else you would spread to the Lucid world?

This is my first recorded mix in my new Brooklyn basement, and it was made with a lot of Lucidflow love. . . it has a lot of contrast, includes some of my favorite dance floor groovers and others I would never play on the dance floor, thus it’s a “canvas” :). thank you for having me

Nadja: Going to bed too late so I feel exhausted. Self-sabotage. Don’t getting my needs met.

Helmut: Too much facebook. Too much unimportant things. Circular Thinking. Too much sugar. Fear.
Confusion. Unstabilizing myself with nonsense.

3. Lucidflow: how do you support yourself in being creative?

Nadja: Workout + meditation + shadow work on a daily basis. Listening to my inner voice, taking rests when i need them. Bringing awareness on my – as Eckhart Tolle calls it – Mental Noise that’s going on in my brain. Cleaning noises through Ho’oponoopono and EFT tapping techniques. Voice Dialogues with my inner aspects. 3-2-1 shadow process and Dr. Stephen Wolinsky’s questions in his numerous books. And lots of other techniques. Taking care of myself and appreciate my life with all it’s people/environment and possibilities in it.

Helmut: Learning the rule : Just do it. Supportive is meditation, yoga, shadow work, voice dialogue. Improving skills and Playfulness is also important.

4. Lucidflow: How did you come across Lucidflow?

Nadja: When Helmut and I founded Lucidflow we took down our ideas in a brainstorming session and Lucidflow was the outcome which we both think mirrors best the sound on our label. Voilà!

Helmut: It was an interesting voice dialogue session with Nadja.

5. Lucidflow: Tell us one of your greatest wishes:

Nadja: I wish all the fear in this world would dissolve… so all pain would dissolve as well and so would the urge to suppress/hide/fight/distrust/disgust/discount and so on…

Helmut: The breakthrough of the next level of consciousness and the empowerment of women worldwide (also in the electronic music field).

6. Lucidflow: Anything else you would spread to the Lucid world?

Nadja: I highly recommend to read Stephen Wolinsky’s Books and practice the self-enquiries.

Helmut: I also highly recommend to inform yourself about the voice dialogue technique from Hal and Sidra Stone and William Buhlman and his view on out of body experiences.

it is a grand mistake to peg Helmut Ebritsch as a man of havles. Providing 50% of Hatikvah, Klartraum and the guiding vision of Lucidflow, coupled with over 20 years in the business counts as pedigree in my book. Having featured on several Lucidflow releases over the last few years, Helmut steps up into the spotlight for his first solo moment since mid-2011.

Usually associated with deep and rumbling dub orientated works, Luminary appropriately showcases a lighter side to Helmut’s production. It seems that our esteemed commander-in-chief has been getting his funk on, highlighted by the fact that he has been turning up to the Agile Mastering studios in full Bootsy Collins garb recently.

Title track Luminary teases you in with little delicate echoes before unfurling snarling keys upon you. Then swinging up the beats and coasting out with a soundtrack for a US West Coast convertible cruise is Sunburst; radiating with light, warmth and smiles.

909 Lover is all about the slap bass and that punchy open hi-hat of that most legendary of drum machines, before Asylum welcomes you in with a change of pace, full of micro-glitching beats and fluid keyboard solos.

If Helmut is reigning as Sun God for all intent and purposes on this EP, Klartraum partner in crime Nadja Lind takes up the role of Sea Goddess with a liquid interpretation of Luminary. Muted and melancholic, the Sin Remix wraps you up in overcast mood and urban drizzle.

Hopefully it will be less than a year and a half before we see Helmut grabbing the headlines once again, but, in case it is, grab this as it could become a collectors item.

1. Lucidflow: How does a creative day look/feel like for you?

In a word busy…its not often I get as much time as Id like to work on music, at the moment im totally committed to djing, I am not overly concerned with production as of yet as I think production should be left to producers and djing to dj’s. I think there are way too many people trying to do both and only being able to be average at both (saying that though, there are a lot of exceptions to that…). I love djing and am not ready to start releasing tracks, so I want to leave that for a time in the future.

Okay that didn’t really answer the question did it? :P I think creativity cannot for forced, you are either are in the mood or you aren’t, though you have to give yourself the surroundings that allow you to be…

2. Lucidflow: How do you hinder yourself in being creative?

I love trying to broaden my mind as much as possible, this comes down to talking to as many different people as possible, reading books from all other the world, trying my best to give myself enough time to search & search for tracks….

Also I find coffee (in the mornings) and scotch (usually at night…) and my cat always put me in the right frame of mind.

3. Lucidflow: how do you support yourself in being creative?

In a simple answer by working too much, I always seem to have a million jobs and little projects on the go at one time. I have to have a 9-5 job to sustain my dj’ing, plus I also run events, and a touring company as well as DJing every weekend…..

4. Lucidflow: How did you come across Lucidflow?

My wonderful partner (and now wife…) was a massive fan of Nadjas music and was always showing me Nadja’s & Klartraum’s tunes and we both feel in love with the music. I was very happy to discover so much good music on the label, especially as I love the deeper dubby sounds. It was great to finally meet Nadja & Helmut last year when they toured Australia and stayed with us and played some gigs together.

5. Lucidflow: Tell us one of your greatest wishes:

I guess it’s a little clichéd, but id love to see more love in the world. If everyone tried to make everything they did in life to have a benefit for other people we’d all be a lot more happy.

1. Lucidflow:how does a creative day look/feel like for you?

We meet up at nine in morning at the studio, having some breakfast and a small chat and then we go to “work”, being creative behind the computer and the other machines :) Around 13.00 we have some lunch and 30 min of chess just to clear the mind ! Then we go back to the play yard and work some more , and around 16.00 we take our bikes and ride home….Usually times flies super fast because we have fun, and once in a while there is also good music coming out of it :)

2. Lucidflow: How do you hinder yourself in being creative?

We are both dj’s and big music lovers so we spend loads of time (at least 2hours pr day)finding and listening to new music…..We also travel alot which gives us lots of new impressions and new sounds in our heads !  Another way  to be creative is to be updated with new plugins & machines, which challenge yourself into trying new stuff and ideas. Reading music magazines and checking out youtube tutorials can also give a boost sometimes :)

3. Lucidflow: how do you support yourself in being creative?

You are sometimes your own worst enemy…..All the things, machine and methods you have learned to perfection and feel comfortable with, is sometimes what stops you exploring and being creative, because you tend to do what you have always done !

Lucidflow:how does a creative day look/feel like for you?

Interesting question and very open ended. Creativity I believe has a direct correlation to the environment in which you surround yourself in – it cannot be forced. Up until recently, I felt in some ways that I was doing this, as I had limited time to devote to creative pursuits, a direct result of balancing my time.
On a personal note, for nearly 8 years, I was a venue manager at one of Melbourne’s biggest house and techno clubs, Brown Alley. Almost my entire life revolved around running the event side of the business, including DJing, producing and event management, and at the same time, trying to write music, DJ each week, run a label, and travelling in between.  For example, once I had a gig in Buenos  Aires and I left Melbourne on a Wednesday stayed there for only one night then flew straight back to Melbourne, went straight from the airport to the club for my event that very night.  These types of experiences definitely helped to build my character and I learned a great deal from my time there.
However, all of this left little time for my own creative pursuits, so I made the decision to leave last month and since then, I have found myself being very productive, positive, and much more spontaneous. For instance, the day after I left, I sat in a park with my laptop and a controller for hours and hours, experimenting with sound, something I never previously had the freedom to even consider! I’m very thankful for my experience throughout that time – the events, people, artists and good times shared definitely influenced my creativity and ambitions for the future. I never thought when I attended my first Sunny party at 19 years of age that it would change my life. I’ll never forget those days and I honestly believe when it comes to musical creativity, you always have a strong affinity with the sound you first fell in love with. I guess that’s why so much of my sound is associated with various forms of low slung, deep music.
Having said that, inspiration for me usually comes after heading out and watching a DJ that really takes it to the next level, and I equally get inspiration watching a DJ who is very uninspiring, one dimensional or pedestrian – it makes me want to write music. Every now and then, you see someone who completely changes your perspective on things and the experience stays with you forever. Recently I had the pleasure of seeing Andrew Weatherall play at a great club, Nu Guernica in Melbourne, and his approach instantly resonated with me. It reminded me of the uncompromising hypnotic style I heard played by the resident DJs at some of the first parties I attended, but with a modernised flavor and unique sleaze that was a game changer for me, big time. I admired Weatherall’s patience – standing on the floor, I gauged he was at 111 BPM 2 hours in, and the place was heaving – a true programmer who basically doesn’t give a fuck – I like that. I went home, showered from sweating up a storm – I haven’t danced 4 hours straight since I was a pup ;) and got to work in the studio. I’m inspired by DJs and producers who have the ability to interest me in a piece of music that outside of that context, I perhaps wouldn’t have considered, but the manner in which they play it, present it, or program then makes sense to me.
Phil K is a major influence for this reason also, along with his technical skills and ability to get himself out on any situation. He has taught me that there are no rules, and if you have the balls and ability to program music in a way that makes sense to you, then an audience will eventually trust you and will go wherever you take them.
The role of a DJ is to entertain, but it’s evident when there’s no self belief in what you play. It can work, you just need to find your balls and find your flavor. This happened recently – it was about 4am and I was watching rage on TV, and heard a riff from this Sade tune that was performed live – instantly I went and wrote a (tasteful I hope) re-edit / remix of it.  know touching a piece of music such as this can be sacrilegious, i hope i kept and maintained the integrity of the original as well as giving it a bit of my own personal flavor.  Link->

Matt Radovich is another source of inspiration for me due to his diverse range of music that he plays and his ability to adapt him self to any environment, I admire his attitude and demeanor which correlates directly to how he performs as an artist.
But the best way I can answer this question “what does creativity look / feel like” in a wider sense, is that in age of electronic music being more and more generic and dare I say easy to make, if you listen to an artist and can instantly identify their individual style, then this is the very essence of what this question means. Look at artists like Mathew Jonson, one chord and you know it’s him. Listen to a Habersham record or to James Holden, or Apparat record, same with Lusine – they don’t imitate, they innovate and do so in a manner that does not date –they are true artists. Good music will always have longevity and will remain timeless.
I am now at a point now where I can translate what I’m feeling creatively with greater ease, and with more time devoted to music this will only come more naturally to me I think.
External forces and factors play a big part in creativity and the quality of your output. I believe two of my favourite productions have been written under two dramatically different circumstances, one being tragic inspiration due to the recent death of my best friend’s brother. After spending the night with them after the funeral = I went home and wrote a record in one take, using an emotive vocal I spent hours sourcing and the track flowed naturally, Last week, it again invoked tears when I heard it played on John Digweed’s Transitions radio show – not something you can listen to every day but how can you control creativity? Another example is a remix I made after being stuck in a hotel room for days far from home after playing in Melbourne the night before. The inspiration and environment in which these two records were written couldn’t have been more different, but this goes to show – the urge to create can come from all kind of places.  Link->

I am not a producer who has 15000 unfinished projects, if I’m finding something doesn’t work then I bin it, simple.
In the end, life and everything it throws at you affects your output.

Lucidflow: How do you hinder yourself in being creative?

You mean what hinders me from being creative? Well, priorities play a big factor. Relationships and not neglecting those you love at the expense of making music, is something you learn over time. It is important to understand there needs to be a balance in all aspects involved in your life.  Easier said than done sometimes however.

Lucidflow: how do you support yourself in being creative?

If you mean financially, well it’s not easy. I worked corporate for 2 years after studying at university but it was not something I enjoyed. I recently saw one of the most inspirational videos I have ever seen which sums up the answer to this question better than I could ever articulate in words. See it here ->
I then formed my own touring company, Funf – www.funf.com.au and am writing music. I recently got engaged, and all these decisions combined have me feeling the happiest I have ever been.

Lucidflow: How did you come across Lucidflow?

I first came across Nadja Lind through mutual friends in Melbourne and through SLAM who sent her my music as they thought she would like it.
I shared their music with my good friend Muska, and he fell in love with it, so we invited Nadja and Helmut to play at one of our event in Melbourne, along with Lusine and Robert Babicz. I am very thankful for the opportunity they have given me to present this podcast.
Although I do play a very ‘Lucidflow’ style of techno, my DJ scope is also very broad which is why I decided to do a 6 hr podcast for this. It will be split into two parts and played over the next month. It has been one of the biggest artistic challenges I have ever encountered in my musical career to be honest, a solid 5 month process. My goal was to showcase how I play when I am given an extended set time length which really only happens when I DJ outside of my home city Melbourne. The challenge not only was to present a cohesive well programmed set but to for it make sense if people only listen to it in sections as opposed to the full 6 hours which most may only listen to in full on long drives or at home at an after party for instance,   Also as it features ambient , electronica, world music, deep house, techno, btrakbeat, and everything in between it really has been a challenge and extremely testing at times -  but it was also very rewarding. I hope you guys like it. Big thanks must go to Rhonda, my fiancé, for being there for me throughout this challenge – I have enjoyed the experience. how does a creative day look/feel like for you?

Hmmmm…..I can’t even say as i don’t think i am very creative.
When i make some tracks i just start somewhere and the rest is try and error…so not what people call a creative process. My tracks happen by accident.

how do you support yourself in being creative?

I have to force myself to sit down in the morning and start to work

as i already said i don’t think i am creative. my tracks are pure maths…not more and not less.
and maybe 25 years experience in djing.
so nothing has a negative effect on my creativity as there is none

When we think January, there are two words that come to mind: Cold innit? Serene moments from Lulu Rouge, Hatikvah, Charles Webster‘s take on Bliss‘ Wish U Were Here and Nadja’s own meditative series carry you gently into your own lucid moment.
Once you are caught up in the rhythmic churn, the mix current starts to pick up momentum as we skip through some Lucidflow favourites from Helmut Ebritsch, Klartraum and Aka Aka, but never losing the mellow groove signifies this compilation. It all depend, sometime my music could reflect an hard working day in a one caotic city, sometimes could be my music research from old recorded tape collection, sometimes I play my hardware synths and find the right inspiration

Listening a lot of music, changing my studio setup, speaking with people to compare different visions.

how do you hinder yourself from being creative?

In dub techno and electronic music I’ve found my dimension, so is easy for me to be creative. The problem is that when you try to make a fresh sound, sometimes the labels doesn’t like because is too different from you past release, but is not a problem because if you keep a good work you will find who believe in your projects.

At the moment i don’t have university lessons to attend, so i study and I do some houseworks,
but i always retail a good portion of my free time to listen stuff like new releases, promos, podcasts.
Sometimes i had some ideas on my mind and i say – now i try to express these.. so i open the
sequencer and that’s it, i start to play with synths, generators etc.

how do you support yourself in being creative?

Well, i think that the main source of creativity comes randomly, it’s not definied when i can be more crative or not, but of course it’s influenced by many facts that happen during my life.
Also hanging or chillin’ out with friends and people in bars or clubs stimulate my creativity, having a nice evening or a bad one obviously can make me feel good or so blue and depressed, but it’s part of this big process (if I should brutally define it with this word) I’m talking about, and I’m ok with that.

how do you hinder yourself from being creative?

As I partially said in the previous question, i’m sure that the absence of stimulations and an apathetic or monotonous life kills creativity. This make you creating junk tracks, in a total mechanical way, without love and expressivity.

how did you come across Lucidflow?

It’s difficult to remember when precisely, but i’m sure one of the first tracks i heard from Klartraum was featured on Soma rec. After i discovered that i heard more stuff of them and of Lucidflow and i definitely gained up my interest.

how does a creative day look/feel like for you?

I normally start off with organic eggs on toast , some Vegemite , freshly allowed squeeze organic orange juice and by 2glasses of scotch then i head off to studio ;)

how do you support yourself in being creative?

it’s really difficult to continually support my creativity, luckily I have my boyfriend and record label always around to help .

how do you hinder yourself from being creative?

when i am surrounded by electronic music all the time i really feel like I need to take a break. So a couple days off always helps.

how did you come across Lucidflow?

My boyfriend had a song signed to their latest compilation so I listened to all their other tunes and really loved it. It was a pleasure to be asked to do this mix.
